I found the greatest wisdom in a remote Chinese Village where I received a fortune cookie with inside it a note from Confucius, which said :



"Go to bed with itchy bum, wake up with stinky finger"

When I was about 12, one summer weekend, I was out shooting baskets barefoot on the concrete driveway, trying to keep moving, to keep my feet from getting too burned by the summer heat. My Dad pulled up in his old pickup, home from a 12 hour overnight shift down at one of the plants on the Ship Channel or in Texas City. He was carrying his lunch box, and headed inside to eat and sleep. He looked tired. He told me I needed to mow the lawn. Being the ignorant, bratty 12yo I was, I said “I can’t wait until I get older, then everything will be so much easier.” Boom, he silently stopped in his tracks. Oh snap, I was expecting the worst. My father turned and walked right over to me facing me. He looked me in the eyes, and simply said, “Son, I hate to break it to you. But, life just gets harder each step of the way.” Then, he turned and went inside. I thought for a moment, put up my ball, and began mowing the lawn.

I must’ve forgotten, or needed a refresher...

A few months ago, a string of endless weeks, with drama after drama at the office. Non-stop. Where do these people come up with this? Can’t anybody do anything right? I was complaining to my mother, “I can’t wait to just have a normal week.” My mother looked up at me and simply said. “Son, you’re in your 40s. You are having normal weeks.” The drama has continued. I still complain some, but am not quite as bothered by it.

Thank God for wise parents!

Exactly. Time is the coin of this realm. Protect it carefully.

Abraham Lincoln observed this in a very practical way:

Time is labor's essential ingredient.
