As Peter Drucker is quoted saying, "the only thing we know about the future is that it will be different".

We buy our cars new, take very good care of them, and keep them for a long time. Since I've been working from home, my high-performance BMW spends a lot of time parked at home. My wife enjoys her Toyota Prius V (it's spacious enough to haul things).

I suspect that, when it comes time to replace one of the cars, we'll opt for an all electric model. That will probably be more than five years in the future (unless one of the cars is totalled before then), and I can only imagine how much better the battery/control technology will be by then.

Releasing the accelerator pedal automatically activates regeneration braking and charges the battery. Stopping distance is similar to using the brake pedal but the braking system is not used unless you really need it.
The brake lights even come on during this process and brake system wear is minimal.

Ron,

The BMW i3 is a fantastic city car. In fact there isn't really any need for petrol or diesel cars if you drive in a city. I am unaware of many people who drive 200+ miles within a city on a regular basis!

Yes there are issues with pollution in electricity generation but the reduction of the local emission of fumes as you stand on the roadside is a godsend.

Sometimes I go a full day without ever stepping on the brake - upon releasing the accelerator pedal the car immediately starts to slow down and this action actually regenerates the electric battery. Very cool!

Similar effect can be easily achieved by forgetting to release the handbrake by our better halves.... Typically followed by questioning the "strange noises" she heard while out on the drive upon returning.

It will be a huge slaughter of pedestrians; the elderly, schoolkids etc, if they become semi universal without significant synthetic engine sounds added.
