There are control apps for the desktop.

You might want to revisit this decision. While vinyl is difficult/time consuming to digitize due to timing issues, etc., using software like dbPoweramp, downloading your CD files in a lossless format like FLAC is a no brainer. I did my thousand, or so, CDs casually over the course of about a month, including back-up on two HDs & two micro SDs. The only digital media I plan to hang on to are SACDs until I figure out how to easily download/playback. Vinyl is a different story.

Don't wait. All methods for doing this depend on having one of fewer than a dozen particular disc players all of which are now available only on the used market. The longer you wait, the less likely you will ever find one.

+1. While you can find cheaper Pioneer and Sony models, a used OPPO 103 works great and can be found online for $350 - $500. I use a 103 and it is easy to archive your SACDs with it.

Many of the other models require more steps and devote reading of a thread on another forum to make them work.

My advice, if on the fence, get the OPPO. I can walk you through the archiving process.

OK, now I really understand what Roon is all about -- a database. Thanks for that crucial keyword, which I didn't see on the Roon site! -- Clark2

But it is much more than a database. It is the management system that sorts your data (music files) by album, track, artist, genre etc and then allows you to PLAY the data (music files) in an myriad of ways that you choose. From choosing an artist and having ROON randomly play all the music you have by that artist to zeroing in on a specific track or even recording of a track.

It then brings in much more information on that album with reviews, insights into who played what instrument or sang with the album artist on a given song and in many cases, links that artist’s music with a simple ‘click’ of your mouse/finger etc.

I love it.

I would start with the node 2 and Tidal. Roon is probably a bit of overkill for your needs. You can always step up to Roon later.

Yes, I think that's best for me, at least for now. I still don't see myself uploading all my CDs, etc. I can, after all, play them directly by only occasionally rising from my chair.

Thanks to everyone for your enlightening comments! -- Clark2

Craig.......... will the OPPO 103 do things that my OPPO 203 won't do?
