ARC tubes well worth it
You must have misunderstood your dealers price quote. (& the factory charges the same as dealer pricing) Think I spent about $1700 on a replacement tube set for ref 210's (both channels) ARC tubes are "drop in, matched replacements" for the original tube set, requiring only finetuning the bias settings. A tube set from somewhere else may be expertly matched & burned in, but may easily be not with-in the adjustment range of the bias controls, making the output section un-biasable. (and unusable) the input section tubes don't have any user accessable controls & you'd need to be an experienced service tech to get any off the shelf tubes to balance out properly in the circuit, if at all. The end result is your amp isn't the amp you paid so much for, not a good place to economize. I would strongly advise against substituting non arc tubes for the input stage & caution those attempting another vendor for output tubes. You need to accurately test a stock output tube before it's time to replace to have any hope of buying tube with similar parameters...(& buy from a place that shares the parameters of what your about to buy)

Quote:
A specific tube operates in a give bias range Therefore any KT120's bias will be able to be set in your amp if the amp will work with a KT120.... |

From "tubestore"... Many amplifiers are designed to require power tubes that have similar cathode current. Even tubes of the same type made at the same time will have variations in their cathode current, and this is why testing and matching is required. Please note that not every amp actually requires it - but it never hurts to have matched tubes. See this answer for more info about whether you need matched power tubes.
Back to top 4. How are power tubes matched? Power tubes are paired up based on their current draw, or "plate current". Measuring plate current draw under operating conditions is generally considered to be the most accurate method for rating a power tube, and it is the method we use." Don't think ARC bias controls have enough range to accommodate "any" tube, needs to be in a close range amp is designed for & ARC doesn't tell you what that range is... |
