What is the opinion of everyone here on using a McIntosh C2300 pre and MCD 500 with 911MK3 amp(s) ? would this be a great combo or would i need to change the pre to Burmester ?

The 911MK3 plays well with others; it is a remarkable amplifier.

I ran this very combo (911 with c2300) up until just before the holidays. As someone once put it "it got burmester's brains" . Perfect match, I still have yet to find a component on either end of a 911 that isnt performing to its absolute fullest. I ditched the c2300 to go direct to the 911 from my source components which to me is the cleanest most transparent sound possible. The tubed wavelength cosecant dac which I am currently running direct into my 911 is absolute pure bliss.

I'm surprised you have no problems driving the 911 with the tubed dac. The 911 has an unusually low input impedance - 10kOhm unbalanced and 2.8kOhm (!) balanced, which puts a lot of load on the output stage. Definately NOT all preamps will be happy seeing such a punishing load.

I'm guessing you were using the unbalanced input ? (which is easier to drive)

A friend of mine tried his VTL 6.5 (or was that 5.5 ?) tube pre via the XLR outs on 911, and ended up blowing tubes (!) in the preamp. He bought the 077 with the external PSU since, and is very pleased indeed (he ended up with 911 monos and 077).

I on the other hand had less luck with the 911 ... in my system, driven with the dCS Scarlatti direct, the sound lacked body and palpability I get with my Dart. Tubed Wavelength Cosecant V3 is most likely warmer sounding then the Scarlatti, which should complimet the 911 nicely.

Yes the cosecant is run unbalanced to the 911. Impedance ratio = 22,900/600 so comfortably above 10 at 38.2. I will upgrade to the flagship Wavelength Crimson giving me the same ratio with SET DHT 71A output tubes.

I also alternate with a weiss medea run balanced to the 911, ratio = 1800/0.2 = 9000.... the weiss medea has an absolute beast of an analogue output stage .

Default Preamp Choice for 911Mk3

Hello all,

Anybody tried the 911 Mk3 with Audio Research Ref 5 or Ref 40 ? Do you think it might be a good match? In addition I need some input for power cords that are compatible with Burmester gear. Which brands fare best? Tried Nordost Odin with Burmester 905 which is amazing (everything sound better as if you have doubled the power) but also ridiculously expensive.

I have not tried anything other than Burmester's own 2.5 power cord which comes with Burmester gear (these sell for around 250EUR on the used market). It's a 2.5mmq wire properly shielded cable with great build quality. Nordost plays well with Burmester so Valhalla might be good?

Where did you get thet info from ? I have already sold the 911 mk3, so cannot compare that with the manual.
