I’m using a Bryston BDA3 between my Lumin U1 streamer and C47 preamp. Very pleased.

It's 3500 dollars, but Dave is right about Bryston. Superb Dac for the money

Stereophile Review

The BDA-3 arrives from the factory ready to play more varied digital file formats than your digital source components are surely set up to deliver. For that reason, demand that any dealer or custom installer who sells you a BDA-3 be prepared to set up the rest of your system to be compatible with all of the formats and sample speeds your new Bryston can handle.

This versatility makes it an ideal reviewer's tool for evaluating other high-end gear. For that reason alone, I had no choice but to buy the review sample, and I recommend that the BDA-3 be listed in Class A+ of Stereophile's "Recommended Components."

With its extremely low levels of noise, harmonic and intermodulation distortion, and its superb resolution, the Bryston BDA-3 offers measured performance that is as good as digital can get.—John Atkinson

At the risk of making these suggestions sound like a conspiracy, I'll add my vote for the Bryston BDA-3. It is simply an outstanding DAC.

I own the second production MCD 1100 (McIntosh kept the first one) and it is a fine sounding disc spinner. It uses several ESS Sabre DACs in a balanced configuration that is far better than most ESS implementations I’ve heard. I also have several different standalone DACs that I think sound slightly better. The Bemchmark DAC 3 HGC is Stereophile Class A rated and is slightly better than the MCD 1100, but carries the same sonic signature. It also features an excellent headphone amplifier. I use this DAC primarily to listen to DSD files.

The DAC I use the most is a Schitt Yggdrasil. It is an R2R DAC where all the others I have mentioned are Delta-Sigma DACs. It excels with Redbook CD type material and higher resolution PCM downloads. It sounds smoother and more natural than the other DACs I have when playing these files.

Happy hunting - lots of great options out there

Plus, it come with a 5 year factory warranty, and is upgradeable.

Another vote for Yggy. Buy once and be done.
