I've always liked this photo...

That photo is by Philippe Halsman. He photographed more important people of the twentieth century than just about anybody.

He was able to do more with know-how and an ordinary enlarger and paper than most photoshop users can do with high powered computers.

Doug, I was actually admiring this piece the other day on the Taschen book (the one that weights a ton!). As minimalist as it is cryptic and fascinating. It's incredible how, as you said in an earlier post, he was able to go from one extreme to the other and yet retain that special signature that made him Dalí. All the way til the end.

Bakerman, thanks for the wonderful Dali.
I too am drawn to the Aliyah series.
I was fortunate enough to find the entire suite including the large blue book and papers with David Ben-Gurion's signature on a recent trip to New York.
I probable paid too much for it but I believe the E.A set should be kept together and not broken up.

Best Regards.

We recently acquired a Dalí copper-plate etching, originally commissioned by surrealist/collector/photographer and later famous publisher, Pierre Argillet.

This particular piece, entitled "Kneeling Knight" and part of a tirage of 150, was created in 1968 and is supposedly hand-embellished by Dalí himself. It corresponds to the "Faust" series, which illustrates the events of the “Walpurgis Night” brilliantly narrated by Goethe’s in his timeless classic.

Here are a few images of the piece:

The entire Pierre Argillet collection of limited-edition etchings and original watercolors, among other works, started in the 1930's with "The Chants Of Maldoror" and continued well into the 70's. It also encompasses other literary classics such as "Venus In Furs", plus a very famous "Mythology" suite, among other "one-off" etchings. The collection is now curated and sold by Pierre's daughter, Christine, who also tours the world trying to spread the word (and enlarge her pockets, of course) about these wonderful, twisted and sometimes quite sexual works.

I'm happy to share our new Dalí acquisition with all of you.

Esteban, congrats on the etching! It is a beautiful piece. The frame, the way the print floats within the space and not having the mat cover up the beautiful deckled edge, is all done in a very tasteful way.

I was planning on telling you that our local art museum just finished a show entitled "Real/Surreal". It was organized by the Whitney and our local museum was one of three I believe that was selected to host this show. They had the entire series of Dali's "Twelve Tribes of Israel" on display as well. First of all I have to say that I think Dali's work is much more advanced than his peers. His concepts and execution are so polished, it really is amazing how well he honed his craft. A true master!

The "Twelve Tribes" series is incredible. They appear to be simple black and white prints with hand coloring at first glance, but upon closer examination they are thought provoking, awe inspiring, beautifully whimsical but at the same time very complex pieces. Your new piece reminds me of this series.

Consider me green with envy...

Well done.
