I was using a recently upgraded and modified GFA 555II. It's a pretty solid amplifier for the money, and for it's age. Like I mentioned early though. Not everyone will agree with my findings. Everyone hears things differently and wants their sound to be how they like for them.

Also knowing this is a McIntosh forum, most people will not agree with my findings

Thank you for sharing your impressions and I don't doubt your findings. Adding any new audio component is tricky because even with careful matching of published specs, it's impossible to accurately predict interactions with other components in your system, room dynamics, etc. Obviously, that's where the listening comes in.

Others have commented that an active crossover approach would offer a range of controls to enable you to better match components and improve your odds of success. It is for this reason that powered subs, an alternative method of integrating separate amps into your system, offer such capabilities. You mentioned that you had tried an active subwoofer previously but didn't share further details.

Many here have leveraged JL subs of various models and configurations (with and without their CR-1 crossover) with great success. Given that you began this process looking for a way to improve bass performance over your current set up while preserving the mids and highs of your tube amp, I'd recommend an audition.

Yeah I thought about going the sub route, but the way I have it set up now makes me pretty happy.

I spend a good 2 hours a day listening to music after work. Which to me is just AWESOME to be able sit and listen uninterrupted for that amount of time. It is very relaxing and makes the days stress disappear.
