There's a really short computer audio primer on the Ayre website (link below). It also has some links that you might find helpful. My experience is that this can be MADE complicated. However, it is not complicated if you stick to the basics. As others have said, you can upgrade 'till your heart's content in the computer audio area. A simple USB cable and JRiver ( or even iTunes if you have a Mac) is an easy enough start.

That's how I started. PC running JRiver connected to a Mac DAC via USB. The first goal is to match the sound of your existing CDP. Then you can try and beat it. The DAC is the most important piece of the digital chain.
Then you can try running Roon with HQPlayer, configuring various filters, configuring NAA's, looking at a dedicated NAA, etc. (which is what I was playing with at the weekend).

Thanks everyone!
I will return the CDR discs on Thur and exchange it for a basic USB cable and then go from there. Will be interesting to hear the BWs society of sound downloads. |
