I would call the upgrade to the BDP-3 the BDP-3u, meaning a BDP-2 with an upgrade. The reason is that once upgraded the BDP2 is a BDP3 because the rear plate and innards would be the same.

The BDP-3 sounds more like a BDP-2 MkII, unless they plan to continue offering both models (which I doubt as it sounds like it was born out of parts obsolescence).

I would really consider Antipodes if you want a new music server. I just went from the BDP2 to an Antipodes DS GT and the differences aren't subtle. No absolutes, but in my humble opinion you would be doing yourself a disservice if you didn't look into Antipodes.

Hi Ricjor1, In regards to the sound quality comparison of BPD-2 to Antipodes, is your BDP-2 equipped with the latest Bryston audio card and if so, were you utilizing it by using either the AES/EBU or BNC digital outputs? Thanks.

Yes, the BDP2 I compared the Antipodes DS GT was updated. I used a Wireworld Platinum BNC cable with the BDP2 into my Rowland Aeris DAC. I used a Wireworld Platinum USB cable from the DS GT into my Rowland Aeris DAC. Every parameter of the music is better through the Antipodes. I'm an end user, not a dealer or associated with Antipodes in any way. I was so disappointed with what I heard, I thought I should post my thoughts. That being said, there are no absolutes in Audio and you may prefer the BDP2.
On a sidenote, my Antipodes DS GT has 2TB of storage. I use it with Roon and just couldn't be happier with the sound quality.

Interesting. This is the first I've heard of Antipodes. Thanks for the info.

A good friend of mine has the Antipodes DX and preferred it over the Aurender W20. He has been telling me to compare an updated BDP2 to any Antipodes music server. I finally decided that the Antipodes DS GT was the most logical comparison. I'm glad I did...now I submit that it's my responsibility to share my findings, with the understanding that everyone may not agree. The good thing is I provided another option.

I have a BDP2 and a BDA3 dac. I am not doubting you because as you say nothing is absolute. I am surprised by the differences being so apparent in your comparison. I too use Roon and MPD with stellar results both ways. I guess I need to hear the Antipodes DS GT. Just saying.
