Great to know, thanks! Did you roll any other than the stock tubes into Freya? I'd interested in using some Amperex 6922s if I owned one.

I would not be in a hurry to switch out the 6SN7 tube Stephen. They are very musical, at least all the preamps I had with those tubes were liquid gold in the midrange.

Good to know, thanks, Serge.

I moved on from the stock tubes which can be noisy (Soviet NOS stuff from the 70's or 80's), into a matched quad of new production Tung Sol 6SN7's. The sound is clear and real- the true magic of tubes. I have not gone looking for anything beyond this, there is a thread on Head-Fi dedicated to the Freya and tube rolling if you are interested.

For the record- I have WW Silver Eclipse XLR's between the Yggy, Freya, and Vidar's.

Good info, US Blues, thank you! If I get a Freya and Vidar I will keep those recommendations under consideration.

Today I rolled in a new and matched pair of Gold Lion 6922s and a new pair of matched Novosibirsk 6H6p into the Valhalla 2.

After letting Valhalla 2 warm up and stabilize, I gave it a spin with the HD600. This is a definite improvement over the stock tubes.

This complement of tubes tames the slight upper midrange glare I was getting with stock tubes. The upper midrange and the treble region is silkier and smoother.

I'd say the Valhalla 2 has finally locked in with the HD600 cans where I would expect an OTL and HD600/650 to be Still not at the magic level where the Brocksieper EarMax was with Telefunken triodes but not that far behind now with the midrange magic. On the other hand, the Valhalla 2 is more open, dynamic and resolving while almost matching the EarMax in the tube midrange magic.

Have not noticed any significant changes with bass but will keep listening.

Much of the tube magic is back with the Gold Lions.

Good afternoon ALL!

Just a quick note to share the smile of ordering more Schiit...

A Valhalla 2 is on my way, to join a Bifrost and Grado GS1000i, but also an older home theater receiver (Sony, solid state) along with KEF Q700 floor standing speakers...

I am sorry in advance for the stupid "tube/preamp" newbie questions/comments... I haven't been able to see this here or actually in any other forums, though I am pretty sure someone must have asked/answered already...

Is it a bad practice to replace tubes as they go bad and not by pairing them?

My understanding is that they might end up mismatched, but doesn't quite make sense to "waste" good tubes... Or mismatching them will lead to failure towards the good pair? If so, do we need to buy "a batch of matched tubes"? and then replace as they go bad?

(By pair, I mean, the other power/rectifier/preamp valve/tube. No, I am not thinking of replacing the full set... as that would make even less sense to me...)

Thanks in advance for your patience!

All the best!
Ed

Assuming the tube does not go bad prematurely on you but lasts a good while, chances are the others are not too far behind. A matched set would of course be the optimal situation and a matched set of "better" tubes even better. You can always just keep one of the tubes as a spare and see if you notice any channel imbalance if you have to swap it in as a replacement. If so, then you will know you need a matched pair. The Valhalla 2 stock tubes should last you a good amount though and I would suggest seeking better tubes in time to increase the level of listening satisfaction. The stock tubes in Valhalla 2 are a just a bit lean in the midrange to my ears but that was only discovered by comparison and certainly not terrible sounding. The Gold Lions were much better and there are other alternatives.

Thank you for the greetings and welcoming message!

yeah, i have been reading about rolling tubes and due to the fact i’m in a remote area, and not able to simply swing by a store to get spare parts.... i’ve actually ordered a spare pair of russians 6n6p and a pair of JJe88cc as they seemed to be a good bang for the buck option...
looking forward to sharing my thoughts on them!

i know equalizing ain’t seen as a “good practice”, but i also have an old ADC in my “stack” that might be able to fine tune the sound to my ears....

cheers,
Ed
