Very strange indeed in that it only wobbles on the first bit of the record. I'm going to completely redo the setup this weekend and see where that gets me. I will most likely add the dual pivot mod as well.

Record warp is generally most significant towards the outer edge of an LP, and that can cause such wobble in undamped unipivot tonearms. Periphery record clamps are another potential solution in helping to flatten out such warps and to minimize arm wobble they can cause.

That's great that you found the root cause of the problem. Your tale just reinforces my prejudice against unipivot arms, though - even though I've heard them perform extremely well in some systems.

Good luck. I know how hard some turntable setup problems can be...

Of course I wish you the best of luck, that goes without saying! I assume you're using the standard screw down clamp with the black washer that come with the VPI Prime table. With that setup you should only tighten the clamp until it's snug but not overly tight. You can experiment with that to see if it affects the wobble, since over tightening it can cause the outer edge of the LP to dish a bit which can cause some wobble.

Problem solved .... one of the prime feet weren’t completely tight at the base so there was a tad bit of play so as the heavy platter would spin it caused some very tiny movement of the base which was worse at the edge of the record ... which caused the arm to wobble excessively causing the rumble. Now my only problem is that I auditioned the Avenger Reference with the Transfiguration Proteus today and am having delusions of grandeur now! LOL

Excellent news, it’s great when these things turn out to be a simple fix. But don’t let that hold you back, let your delusion become your reality.
