Default Is it just me?

I am seeing more and more threads where forum members are expressing opinions about gear they haven't personally heard or experienced.

The value of forums like AA is to provide first-hand information based on your personal observations.

It's great to have an opinion and to love the gear you own. But, please, if you haven't heard it, don't compare it to something you own, or worse, discount another forum member's first-hand observations.

Tom

Tom
I have noticed this a good bit, for a while as a lurker a few months back while researching what to buy, and now more recently as a owner/user, but not just on this forum, there are two others that I'm on where members do the same.

I have several dealers for various brands around me in the SF Bay Area so I've had the fortune to hear a lot of different stuff, but sometimes even just a quick listen isn't enough to develop a feel for something, especially if the choice of music being played doesn't resonate with you (as the listener)..

This happened with me when I first heard the Vivaldi vs the Bartok by dCS... at first I had a hard time telling the difference, but then we put on a track that I am very familiar with and the resolution was immediately noticeable .. as such, I ordered the Rossini with clock, sight unseen because I had the contrast of the lower end vs the top end, and took it for logical that the mid range would be a combination of both.. as I've not had the chance to hear them side by side, for me right now, and with my system the Rossini sounds great... but would I feel the same way if I had it next to the reference system I heard the Vivaldi on? (D'Agostino amps, Wilson speakers, and the Vivaldi).. probably not!

I haven’t noticed as much but I have noticed just a little less patience with others here and elsewhere.

I think your message to stick with firsthand impressions could help that by lowering the ‘opinion’ level a bit.

Dan would whip us into shape. We need a Gentleperson to serve as an exemplar.

Thanks all - I guess it’s just something we all should strive to for.
