Default Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 5

Continuing with the Tchaikovsky theme...

Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 5 in E minor, Op. 64
Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Valery Gergiev

This interpretation was taped live at a Salzburg Festival concert by ORF. A great sense of occasion permeates this recording: a one-off performance without edits or retakes. It is bursting at the seams with passion and vitality. It is clear that Gergiev and the VPO like making music together. Enthusiastic applause at the end caps the performance. The Decca audio quality is very good.

Gergiev's 6th was recorded on the day of the terrible terrorist attack on a Beslan school in Russia, which ended with some 380 dead. The intensity is palpable.

Wow. I was not aware of that, John. I'm going to play it soon keeping that in mind.

Listening to . . . Greensleeves - A Collection of English Lute Songs

Julianne Baird - Soprano
Ronn McFarlane - Lutes

A Dorian CD, Recorded in 1989

Very nicely done. Fairly familar English tunes, relatively hard to sing, but Ms. Baird's beautiful voice and total control make this a play again and again CD - and Ronn McFarlane is a very accomplished lutist.

These Dorian CD's are of near audiophile quality, very fine quality and content.

Julian, I did the same as you: some nice and quiet music this morning, going from JC Bach, over Dowland, to Haydn and Eugène Ysaÿe.

But now, around noon, time for some seriously intense stuff:

Shostakovich - Symphony No. 4
Gürzenich-Orchester Köln, cond. by Dmitrij Kitajenko

A very important work, composed '35-'36, but withdrawn after the first rehearsals. Shostakovich even burnt the manuscripts. It was the time when Stalin started to eliminate alleged opponents and this work might have been too provocative.
Later, the work was restored based on his sketches and part scores, and performed for the first time late '61, with overwhelming success.

As I said before, the sound quality of this series is amazing.

My collection a bit old school/new school, so while I continue to listen, I have decided to delve into the Jazz, and Rock sections of my collection. FWIW
Regards,
Jim

Default Brahms: Symphony No. 1

Going on the road for a few days on business, but before I leave I wanted to enjoy one of my favorites...

Brahms: Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 68
Budapest Festival Orchestra, Iván Fischer

In my opinion the best "#1" symphony by any composer. A great journey from the dramatic minor key opening tympani chords to the last movement closing bars in major key. The horn theme in the fourth movement is sublime (at 2:58 in track 15). The Channel Classic SACD recording captures all the details and there are many in this piece. Listening to this music is a privilege that I'm thankful for.

Listening to . . . . Richard Strauss - Ein Heldenleben Op. 40
Till Eulenspiegels Lustige Streiche, Op. 28

Berlin Philharmoniker - Herbert von Karajan, Conductor

Recorded in 1959, von Karajan's postwar debut on DG. . . . and if you like Strauss' tone poems. . . . this is no doubt a world class work of beauty. I don't happen to be a fan, but I'm enjoying this early morning waker-upper nevertheless.

"Herbert von Karajan's post-war debut with Deutsche Grammophon was this classic 1959 recording of Ein Heldenleben, coupled here with a sizzling account of Till Eulenspiegel from 1972/73. Apart from Karajan himself, one of its stars was violinist Michel Schwalbé, who became the orchestral leader of the Berliner Philharmoniker in 1957. According to Gramophone critic Deryck Cooke, Karajan's performance has a fire and sweeping breadth which results, "surprisingly, not in bombast but in true nobility."

Don't stray too far away Jim. You are too valuable to us here in the old school house.
