Ed.......Have you tried resetting the microprocessor?

From the MEN220 manual:

Reset of Microprocessors - In the unlikely event the controls of the MEN220 stop functioning, the microprocessors can be reset by removing AC Power from the MEN220 for several minutes. This can be accomplished by disconnecting the AC Power cord from the Rear Panel of MEN220 or removing the “Plug” end of the MEN220 AC Power Cord from the AC Outlet.

Thanks Dan I did do the reset but no change. Very strange.
Well I guess I will see how it sounds with the MEN220 out of the system.

Are you able to access the setup mode through the menu?

That being the case and given that a microprocessor reset did nothing...I would suggest a factory reset as per page 23 of the manual. Mind you, you will have to go through the setup and calibration procedure again.

The only other possibility I can think of is to contact McIntosh for support.

Good idea! I will give it a shot after all the Thanksgiving guests depart. Thanks again.

Hello, how old is your unit?

I have a unit that's brand new from the factory about 2 months ago, and I have never had any problems, mine works perfectly. But earlier models have had some processor problem and I believe some of the cards had to be replaced.

I'm sure some other users here with more experience with this issue can comment, and I believe if you search this forum, you might find a specific serial number range for the problem models. I don't know if that has anything to do with the problem you're currently experiencing but there was a processor issue with older models. If you have a newer model, obviously this would be a moot point.

Interesting comment on older models having cpu issues.
I’m considering a second hand unit of 4 years old right now.
How do I know if this is a vulnerable unit?
I can ask for the serial number.

Also the men220 has been in the line up for a long time. Is it still the same unit/components?

I would definitely ask the seller for the serial number, and then call Chuck Hinton at McIntosh and ask him if that's one that was included and the recall.

I think aside from the parts that were changed due to this problem, I think it's basically the same unit it was from day one.
