MX135 In Protection & Other Issues
Well, my uber expensive MX135 (decent purchase price, expensive repair right after it was put in service, one more electronic failure followed) got me again recently.
It started shutting down (protection mode) after about an hour of play time. At first it would power back up if I told it to and then shut down again approximately an hour later. Soon, the interval between shut downs decreased and finally it was No Go. A friend kindly loaned me one of his 2-channel NAD units and the MX135 was dropped off with the local McIntosh authorized service center. I put the TV on internal speaker, made up a new connection from the DAC to the NAD for music, and from the NAD to the pair of MC501 amps as an interim measure, switching everything to unbalanced RCAs. The service center had about a 2 week backlog but eventually got it on the bench, tested the unit, found that it did indeed go into protection and found the culprit...a DSP chip. Now, the NAD is not a cheap component and, in fact, it didn't sound too bad in the system but it did leave me wanting the MX135 back. But at least I had tunes while the McIntosh was being repaired. All the surround connections were sitting idle as the NAD doesn't accommodate that function. The MX135 returned home last night and I got it connected. Since it had been powered down and tested, all my input settings were reset to Default plus the failure had thrown my McIntosh USB driver into a panic. So, I no sound on any input as of bed time last night. I resolved to rectify that issue post haste. So the morning dawns bright, clear and cold. After coffee and breakfast I dig into the tasks ahead of me. I resolved the McIntosh USB driver issue by downloading a new copy from the website, opening it up and making a fresh install on my music server. Then I turn on the MX135, open the Setup menu (displayed on the 75" Samsung QLED) and assign all the inputs. Lastly I checked the connections between the DAC and the TV, reconnected balanced inputs on the amps and tested the Roon feed to the DAC via the music server. It all looked good so I turned on the system and selected some Mark Knopfler tracks through Roon. No sound... I swapped over to the TV / Roku box and...no sound...hmmm.... At this point I am confused...and a bit frustrated as I spent a half hour last night making up the connections back to the MX and another half hour this morning with the input settings and verifying physical connections. I was starting to suspect that I still had a problem with the MX135. OKAY...this is why I hate getting old...  I had made at least 7 mistakes: 1 & 2 - I had turned off the right and left MC501 amps to complete the balanced XLR connections vs. the RCA unbalanced connections I was temporarily using. I forgot to turn them back on. 3 & 4 - I had switched the MC501 amp inputs to "Unbalanced" when I connected the NAD to them. I forgot to switch them back to Balanced. 5, 6 & 7 - I had unplugged the center channel, right surround and left surround amplifier connections when I put the NAD in service. I connected them to the Zone 2 center, right and left surround jackpack on the back of the MX135. Uhmmm....everything else is in Zone 1 dummy... Oh, the trials and tribulations of Senior Citizen Audiophiles...  At least I had the mental capacity to re-check the connections, switches and such, recognizing what I done wrong. When the day comes that I won't recognize those mistakes you can just plant me in the nearest clear patch of ground.  And by the way...it all works gloriously now. I am a happy listener, and viewer, once again.
