I enjoy McIntosh’ byline which states that “a total of 16 inputs-a virtually infinite number to connect all your music sources”.

I have seen marketing superlatives but this has to be the greatest ever!

16=infinity?

I also prefer my preamp without the RFI of a high performance DAC inside (I am not trying to stir up this old argument, just MHO).

I wish Mcintosh would make a reference stand alone DAC. I understand the reasoning behind Preamp Dac combos. People like the one box solution. And now with the upgradeable module I don't see a stand alone Dac happening.

Isn’t the D-1100 their reference DAC?

It’s a digital preamp. They need to make a DAC that’s just a DAC like the MDA700 was. No volume control, just input switching.

I thought it was a reference DAC with a volume control.

Yep, but combo. Preamp with reference Dac. I use it just as a DAC.
