Default Handel: Messiah Blu-ray Audio

Getting in the mood for the season...

Handel: Messiah Blu-ray Audio
Judith Nelson, Emma Kirkby, Carolyn Watkinson, Paul Elliott & David Thomas
Choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford & The Academy of Ancient Music, Christopher Hogwood

A classic. The performance is superb and the all-male choir sounds excellent to my ears. The icing on the cake is the excellent recorded sound. Yes, this is a winner.

From the promotional materials...

Regarded as one of the most important recording events of the late twentieth century, Christopher Hogwood’s iconic recording of Handel’s Messiah is considered to be one of the finest of all time.

Decca has gone back to the original tapes to make a definitive transfer and proudly presents the first ever “period performance” and multi-award-winning recording for the first time at 24-bit / 96kHz.

The High-Fidelity Pure Audio Blu-ray disc, in particular, affords an unprecedented opportunity to hear the recording at this resolution.

Presented with original cover design in hard back book presentation and sung text with translations in German and French. The booklet includes: Hogwood’s original in-depth analysis of The Messiah; a note by Anthony Hicks; a reappraisal by Lindsay Kemp; Archive Photos. Also included are 2 remastered CDs and 1 Blu-Ray Audio Disc containing the complete oratorio at 24-Bit.

I really love "ice princess" Emma Kirkby's voice on this performance. If you're going to have only one, this the one to have.
