Previously I used the VPI 16.5. This was my first machine, and gave me years of work without any issues. When I was looking to upgrade I discovered the Hannl line of cleaning machines. After evaluating my cleaning process I decided not to go with a machine with a cleaning fluid reservoir. My initial thoughts was it would be convenient, but after thinking about the time between cleanings, possibility of changing fluids, and cleaning it seemed more trouble than it was worth. I decided to go with the Hannl Micro EL. The features are ideal for my use, and it is significantly quieter than the 16.5. At least I don't where earplugs anymore when cleaning records. I have cleaned 33 1/3, 45, and 78's with the machine with complete satisfaction, but my only complaint would be the cost of the additional suction tubes for 45's and 78's. After using both the 16.5 and the Hannl Micro EL I wish I would have purchased the Hannl first since I suspect I would not upgraded this machine.

I would suggest you guys find a dealer who has both the Okki Nokki and the VPI and compare. The VPI has been the benchmark in the budget category for years. In fact ours at Sumiko was used heavily until Norbert came back from Germany with an Okki Nokki. Once we tried one we never looked back.

I'll leave it you to decide. You only have to buy 1. Based on what we experienced we bought every one they could supply. There's a reason we continue to be heavily backordered and it's not lack of production.

I recently received an Okki Nokki to replace a beat up VPI 16.5 (given to me) that the vacuum went out on. I wasn't that thrilled with the VPI in the first place so I didn't bother to fix it. My record collection isn't very large so I thought it would be a waste to spend more than $500. The Okki Nokki is better in every way, much quieter, more compact, much better looking, aluminum case and pick-up, two-way rotation (I didn't think it would make a difference but it does) and a float in the water tank that prevents water damage to the vacuum if you're careless. On the other hand, the motor on mine has a problem that has gotten progressively worse so it is probably going back and I will have to wait 1-2 months for my dealer to get them back in stock. Hopefully this was an abberation, but if the replacement shows any problem I am done with Okki Nokki and will spend my money on something else.

I saw one of these Okki Nokki's today at the local McIntosh Dealer.
I may call him tomorrow, and order one, and give it a shot.

Sorry to have to resurrect an old thread, but I am now in the market for a RCM.

The consensus here and on other forums is that the VPI is tried and true, but the Okki Nokki have a few advantages over it. Is this still the case?

I have never used the VPI, but I have the Okki Nokki and have no complaints. Actually, I'm on my second one. After a year of cleaning a lot of records with the AIVS 3 step process, the vacuum power switch on my Okki Nokki started getting flakey. Within a week I had a brand new one as a replacement, at no cost to me. I would have been happy just getting the power switch replaced. +1 to the Okki Nokki for the great support from Sumiko.

I used a Nitty-Gritty for years and thought it was good,but noisy.I now use a Loricraft,quiet and superb.
Records I thought clean on my original machine,the odd click down to groove damage,have now come up silent.
