I like it loud, don't get me wrong, but most of the time it won't be ear-splitting levels... Still, nice to know it can go loud, that I've got that option.... Synergy wise, I've read in a couple of places that the 802Ds are a fine match, but read mixed things about the Sashas.. Any thoughts?

I like my power too

Sasha's are not my cup of tea, so I'm the wrong guy for that question. Your room size is fine; don't under estimate the 2301.

In summary:

RedNeckMc - 1 stock KT88 failed at about 20 hours
Jérôme - strange noise when powered on
vintage_tube - 2 old GL KT88 failed
W9TR - 1 stock KT88 failed at about 50 hrs

This is quite strange for an amplifier as MC2301!

Don't confuse loudness with "control" over speaker....

I really don't think that there could be a reliability problem with the 2301 or any other McIntosh tube amp.
Tube amplifiers are the historical heart of McIntosh.
No other company has a 60 years experience at the higher level with them.
No other company built tube amps as famous as McIntosh, and during so many years.
Bad tubes concern more the tubes makers than McIntosh per se IMHO.
