Next time I experience my system sounding wrong, I am going to try some relaxation exercises. I believe that my hearing varies based on my level of tensions in the body. Relaxation techniques to reduce stressers in the body may clear up temporary hearing impairments & as the system sound improves, so does your overall physical condition. Your stereo can possibly be a tool for improving your health & sense of well being.

It is a known fact that hearing can and does fluctuate daily as does pitch perception. It can vary from mild fluctuations in healthy adults to rather severe with active disease process such as Meniers and other disorders. Not to mention the mood and how we perceive sounds and music depending on stress levels and other factors. I don’t condone the use of marijuana nor am i in the habit myself but we all know music sounds very different...
One can buy all the power conditioning they want but the fluctuations in how we perceive our sound system day to day will still fluctuate. |

If you have one of the PS Audio regenerators with the o-scope function that may give you an answer. Depending on power grid usage (heavy demand, peak times) the AC coming from your wall-outlets is visibly distorted. In my location I will see distortion as high as 3.6%. Times of heavy demand may leave all your equipment "current starved".

I have a PS audio regenerator and the distance from my fuse box to my equipment is only a few feet

Many causes, and certainly the listener
I agree with all these--
Mood: I've given up liquor, but when I drank Scotch or Armagnac while listening, there was less variation in my response from day to day. Now I don't take the edge off, and the edge can affect things. Energy: If I'm tired, it's hard to react with the same pleasure. Ears: As I've gotten older, one ear or the other (or both) is more likely to be slightly congested. The ENT says, "Live with it." Source material: There are huge differences among recordings, and I for one don't like to listen to the same thing every day. As to AC power, many say it varies and has an impact. I've never tested or noticed it, so who am I to say? |

For me, the biggest factors are energy and, recently, head cold. If I’m wiped out from work, I may turn the system on, but just don’t have the juice to have a critical/fun listening session - it’s background noise. If I have more time and energy, it changes everything.
Last two weeks, I’ve just had a darn head cold and everything sounds awful. That said, I think the system sounds largely the same - it’s just my ability to process it. Sent from my iPhone using New Forum mobile app |
