@ jimtranr - I LOVE your solution. Not only does it allow storage of a lot of records, but it also allows a collection to be moved relatively easily.

Thanks,

Gregory

I really like this idea for the reasons you note. Also this will save on album cover wear as you are not sliding them in and out of a bookshelf type of storage system. One last thing is that when we age the printing on the side or an album may get harder to read.

Thanks for posting this option.

Great option, but when we age it's a pain to get to the albums on the bottom.

Thanks, Gregory. Portability was in fact a consideration in doing it that way.

Gary Protein's suggestion of a three-to-four-inch pedestal is an excellent one.

When we had this custom unit built a few years ago I had them reinforce the longer shelves with horizontal steel pieces. We wanted to make sure it could handle most any weight without sagging.

I have Ikea Expedit, but I plan to switch over the replacement Kallax shelves next year when I expand. I don't think I could afford any other solution to house my collection of some 3000 LPs.

The Kallax lists having to secure the unit to the wall, in case of tipping. Do you do this with the Expedit?

I like the LPbin site, that's single purpose though. I cannot place gear and photos on those.

I live four miles from a serious California fault, have lived in California almost all my life, and have left my Kallax shelving unattached. They sit low, and weigh a ton when full. I don't think they will tip over. The Expedit would be the same as the Kallax on this score, but is basically not available any more. It is discontinued.

The Kallax is an excellent and stunningly cheap product! Order one, put it together and see for yourself. You'll buy more.
