Default 'Hipster kryptonite': will CDs ever have a resurgence?

There are of course many of us who still buy CDs, me included, and yet cd sales continue to decline. Audiophiles are a pretty small (and shrinking) part of the market. The question is will a younger generation revive them in years to come like vinyl was revitalized? In 10 or 20 years will CDs be retro cool the way vinyl is today? I think probably not. I think the streaming generation will probably not look back to what will become an increasingly niche or obsolete product.

I've purchased tons of CDs since about 1984, but now that I've started streaming Tidal, they're just gathering dust these days.

I really think the CDs best days are behind it and there wont be a resurgence in them the way there was with LPs.

The quobuz etc age reminds me of the scene from Day at the races when Chico is selling Groucho endless race form books. If you don't fork out for an expensive tablet, modern hi fi ( I'm thinking of you Naim) are just blocks of metal. I think I will always be a CD man as long as it's possible. Perhaps the free download windows media will go hi res one day for one's Dap, but it's not essential. I like's me solid in me hand media, and the convenience of using a small remote control to control the volume/ media selection when I'm having a doze. But then my ears have been pummelled by the live music scene so CD is more than enough SQ for me.

I have about 3000 CDs total, and they are my musical medium of choice since the mid-80’s and walking away from vinyl. It has nothing to do with vinyl, but everything to do with the way I listen to an album (Ie - numerous listens to a single tune or album in its entirety, etc...). Thus far I have only had to download 1 album and transfer to CDR as no physical CD form was available, 1 CD failure over time, and 1 CD that was new with a read only error since my transition from vinyl to CD. IMHO these are exceptional odds that I can easily live with. Furthermore this collection has experienced a lot of relocations over the years such as moving from Georgia to Alaska and from Alaska to Texas without any breakage. I will keep spinning the silver disk until I am carried by six I suppose. 🤪

+1.

I keep adding CDs in addictive fashion... It is far easier at least to me to get to new
and old music (but mostly old), either in local record/CD shops and online as well.
Long time ago I commited to CDs and my collection is such that I wouldn't start a
record one from scratch. The current "demise" from CDs due to streaming, records,
online and HD sales is also making CDs more affordable in a way, which is a welcome
development. I do rip all of them so that I can access them easily, but I enjoy
the joy of spinning them when I'm doing serious listening.
