I have a pretty good vinyl pressing plus the DVD-A and a high res DL, along with various CD pressings.
As has been said, it's an early 16/48kHz recording so the CD is about as good as it gets, as long as your CD playback is half decent. I was a bit disappointed with the DVD-A because the high res stereo tracks had been max'd, same as with Kamakiriad, so the album is less dynamic than it should be. The same affliction exists with the SHM SACD version of Aja, although Gaucho is OK for the most part.
Having said all that, to my ears, while Nightfly isn't the most perfectly recorded album; sounding a bit thin and clinical for the most part; it is definitely dynamically untainted, and blessed with so many wonderful session players, it stands as one of my favourite albums of all time.
How anyone could dismiss it simply because it's a "1982 digital recording" is unfathomable.
