I sent my 6550s to the tubeman, Ken Chait in florida who was kind enough to chryo them for me. I pulled kt 120 chryoes from my cj premier 12's and was much happier with the 6550's than i had been. i noticed the following differences:
bias had to be set a lot hotter. amp turn off thump had a lot less weight 6550 had less deep bass impact 6550 had a more nounced mid range with more inner detail 6550 cymbals were a little wetter/whispy but highs did not seem as extended Overall i still like the kt 120's in this amp better. however if i could have the best of each it would be close to perfect. wish i still had some non chryo kt 120s to compare against the chryo 6550's. For me bad to good was regular 6550, regular kt 120, chryo 6550 and chryo kt 120 best. this may change with a different amp. the amp's sound changed a lot with each of the 4 tube options. what you hear or read about a tube amp is only applicable with that tube. one of the best things about tube equipment is to be able to revoice things to improve synergy. how many solid state owners wish they could do the same? PS went back to the kt 120s immediately noticed the mid and upper bass to be much more even with the low bass to the point of greatly diminishing an upper bass hump room/speaker interaction.
