All evening I have been in the studio listening to the tube sound system. At the same time I have been adjusting the Guarneri Memento's positions a quarter inch at a time, both in distance from the outer walls, and toe-in. Each speaker is now one and a half inches closer to the outer walls. The toe-in has the axis of the tweeters crossing approximately six inches behind my head at the primary listening position. What I have achieved with this new positioning is a greater focus of the sound stage, and a sound stage width that now exceeds the distance between the speakers. I was listening to a CD from Niles - Up Close And Personal, and one of the tracks had maracas being shaken on the left side of the sound stage. My reflexes made me turn my head to look at the left side wall. The sound appeared beyond the left side of the left channel speaker. I was literally awe struck, and surprised.

The more I listen to the Guarneri Memento's, the more mesmerized I become with them. The additional time I spent tonight fine tuning their positions in the room has paid a rewarding dividend. The overall presentation is so three dimensional, and wider than the phsical distance between the GM's. Needless to say, the C1000T, MCD500, and mono MC275 amps are like liquid gold to the GM's, and the sound presented is so luscious, and alluring. No wonder I find myself having to dig deep each night to find the will to turn the system off and go to bed. Truely amazing sound is coming from the McIntosh studio tube system and the Sonus Faber Guarneri Memento's. I am thrilled.

Dan, many high end speakers are able to throw a soundstage that extends way beyond the edges of the speakers. In some treated rooms I've even witnessed depth and width of soundstage that broke the physical barriers of the room itself. The GMs are no different, excellent imaging and focus when one takes time to set them up and the acoustics of the room allow it. Try some CDs that have phase tricks like Roger Waters "Amused to Death" for example and you will get images all over the room, next to you, on the left, right and up at the ceiling.

Serge........I have already experienced this, even before the placement adjustments this evening. I was listening to a Lee Ritenhour CD where there was synthesizer sounds created behind Lee's guitar that moved sounds and phase changes all over the place. I was on the couch with the lights out, and at one point the synth sounds appeared to hang over my head, then dropped down to inside my head like mono headphones sound, then move back to the middle of the sound stage between the speakers. When the sound went from over my head to inside my head it was hypnotic, almost strange and spooky. It completely capture my thoughts at that moment.

When the gasketed door that seperates the control room from the studio room is closed, the room is extremely tight, and very silent. The speakers couple with, and excite the air in the room in a seemely effortless manner. It is a very good sounding room. The GM's are free to act like children playing in a big grassy field. They seem to know no boundries, and the fun never stops.

I can now vouch for this first hand.....this is a great sounding room, and these great speakers sound great in it. I'm still thinking about how great everything sounded in there....

Pete.......I am now beginning to think about more tube power. I know, I know. I've heard it all before.

Anyway, the MC2301's might be just the ticket. I'm thinking about it just a little bit. I just haven't decided if I want to part with that much cash-o-la. That's a lot of hundred dollar bills any way you look at it. I could offset part of it with the sale of the MC275's, though, but that still leaves a lot of hundred dollar bills to plunk down.
