Is the Accuphase E-650 a bit long in the tooth?
I am planning to pull the trigger on the Accuphase E-650 Integrated. But I wonder if it will soon be outdated by a newer model perhaps the E-680 or something, given the E-650 is almost 3.5 yrs old.
Any thoughts? Should I go for it? Or is this model going to be refreshed soon and perhaps I should wait a month or two. I am an Accuphase noob, so don't know their product cycle times. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, since this is a largish investment for me. |

If you pull the trigger today, you'll get an excellent amp soon. I wouldn't worry about future models to come in 2021 or 2022. An E-650 will still be an excellent amp in two, five or ten years.

I think the E-650 might stay a little longer in their catalogue.
They have another integrated amp that tops their range now: http://www.accuphase.com/model/e-800.html

Is the Accuphase E-650 a bit long in the tooth?
Quote:
Accuphase lifecycle is around 4-6 years - I assume we are about 2 years away from a replacement for the E-650. Also the changes from iteration to iteration are not huge: In my experience, the differences between the E-600 and E-650 were more like a slight difference in flavour - in some ways I actually preferred the 600 during my initial comparison. I have been meaning to do another comparison now that the 650 has been running in my main system for a year...the 650 took a long time to break in and I need to revisit initial impressions. The other thing is that once you get an Accuphase piece, most like it and are happy and are able (some are anyway) to get off the upgrade train. It would suck though to buy it and then have it displaced in the next few months, but you’re kind of dead square in the middle of their normal cycle and will love it.

Typically, Accuphase products have a 4-year cycle. Their flagship products, 5-year. The E-650 came out in 2017, I expect its replacement (E-660?) to be released some time next year.

Either way, I owned the e650 for a year while I renovated my room and loved it. I went back to separate monos and pre when my room was done, but if I had to downsize today, I’d go with the 650 and not worry about an upgrade.
