Has MQA Won..........?
Don't read much about MQA these days (gone from much magazine coverage). Has MQA won and is thus no longer a controversy or has standard hi-rez won? Or, do they simply co-exist? Am thinking of going with Roon & one of the hi-rez services, but have no interest in MQA (at least I don't think I do). Please help an analog guy out. Tell me what's the state of the digital world these days? Is it redbook, hi-rez or MQA streaming/downloads?

My experience, redbook continues to die, streaming continues to grow with new competition continuing to enter the market. Tidal champions MQA but the future of Tidal is in question per this article.
https://www.forbes.com/sites/korihal...4#4f29259a6b98 Qobuz entered earlier this year and it’s claimed to fame is hi-rez with Amazon as a johnny-come-lately entry. These are not the only ones but are generally spoke about in the audiophile realm. They all have their plus and minuses dependent on what is important to you. For example; user interface, song and genre selection, MQA/hi-rez, playlist etc. I’m currently using Tidal but do not like the default song selections, to much hip-hop. It’s nice to explore and find new artist this way. My wife and I will spend hours at night listening to new musicians that we would have never listened to because it’s fun and easy. Also, this forum has threads with users offering some great suggestion. If we find an album, we REALLY like than we buy it on CD, SACD, or hi-rez. Lastly, I have a Vault2i alone with another library packed full of songs so I foresee Roon in my future which would make it that much easier. Equipment? That’s another story.

Yep. That's exactly why my DAC & streamer budget is low. As soon as I purchase one or the other the digital world will change, so would have been a waste.

“a waste”? but your point is valid. It is a disposable society out there. Therefore, looking/paying for quality items can be a gray area full of second guesses. The good news is audio manufactures are offering more and more upgrade paths for their equipment. Such as McIntosh’s DAC1 & 2 or PS Audio FREE software upgrades. I’m personally working back from the speakers. Next up amps than pre-amp. Sources will come later but until then my Vault2i and Oppo 205 will do.

Qobuz and now Amazon make the MQA debate irrelevant because you get hi res streaming without MQA.
Everything that needs to be said about MQA has already been said. It is either a lossy communist plot to take over high quality audio storage and reproduction, or it as implemented in Tidal it is a great sounding streaming option. I own a lot of digital audio. Up until last week it was scattered around different computers in my home. I finally bit the bullet and bought a NAS device and moved all my music to it. The best digital I have is hi-res played from a local source. Streaming hi-res with Qobuz and Tidal works well and sounds good. Both our houses are very rural and so steaming sometimes fails - usually in the early evening. Probably on our end. Finally good ole Redbook can sound excellent. Last but least is those same Redbook CD’s played on a local player. I use a Surface Pro for my digital ‘endpoint’ it drives The Yggdrasil DAC. I am very satisfied with the sound I’m getting. It has taken a long time and a lot of effort but the results best all but the very finest vinyl I have.
