I am type 2 and I love rice . When I go out for Szechuan, Thai, or Sushi I try to find places that serve brown rice. I took a little getting use to but know I find that I like it better in some things. I have dropped about 20lbs and my doctor said if I lose another 20 I could probably get off it.

Also lifting weight seems to help me more than cardio.
