I also have GIK Gotham installed. I would re-consider my decision if I knew their weight. And because of the weight, it’s super hard to align them right when hanging together. It took me two days to have my 8 pieces done.

I'm interested in perhaps building a screen of the panels with diffusion that covers the glass of the TV when listening to music with some sort of lift, but that gets complicated and probably tacky. Dan's report on his art panel is very interesting.

I wonder if I went too far after the first reflection point and base traps. Kept adding to fix deadness. Probably why I like the diffusion.

I'm past decorative taste with all the treatment-- especially building my own panels at first reflection point and overhead (I like rugs so did the attached pretty easily with some damaged/clearance rugs). This is my main den/kitchen room. I'm lucky enough to live with an understanding dog (the treatment will re-enforce that status, which is fine at my age -- priorities).

You can definitely use too much absorption - kills the room. Anything over about 20% of the surface area (don't forget to include the floor and carpet) being "absorptive" will usually be overly damped. Treatments outside of the primary reflection points in front of the speakers should be diffusive if possible. Small 1' by 1' panels (like the Burton Acoustix superdense) can be handy to keep absorptive areas minimal but effective.

Interesting. I am concerned with overdoing the absorption. I do not like dead rooms.

I’ve been reading through GIK’s website. Some good info, but of course it’s a sales pitch. The advice is also more studio biased, which has different objectives than our listening rooms.

I am calculating that I can make extensive skyline-style diffusers using 4x4 inch posts from Lowe’s for just a few hundred dollars and spec it to my exact size needs. GIK’s site says that random length pieces will be ineffective and their Gotham diffusers are mathematically way superior (and awesome looking, but multiple times the cost). Ugh!

I’ve lived that conclusion. I was going to build more panels (without diffusion) but when I leaned spare insulation panels at the locations, I didn’t like the sound. So I started buying the panels with diffusion a few at a time. Each addition added more dimension/detail, lowered the noise and smoothed out the measurements. Sound stage got bigger when I put the ones around the screen. So absolutely go slow.

I’ve got a lot of glass, hardwood floors, kitchen surfaces, and a long narrow room. Use to have a MEN220, which did lots for base and low mids but not the upper mids and highs in my hell room. I decided with the treatment I preferred not having the DS DAC of the MEN220 in the path and traded it in on another toy.

GIK makes good products. Using 1" x 1" posts in a quadratic array would work well, and I saw a kit somewhere to make those with pre-cut pieces. Wish I could remember where I saw them? But random lengths (depths) won't do much for you - need to be a proper array of depths. GIK also makes curved diffusors and those work well too - are lighter and provide some absorption below 200 Hz (which usually comes in handy).

The new cabinet is finished. Wiring it up in the morning. Next up is matching oak sub stands and then figuring out the room treatments...
