Surely we are the exception, not the rule. I don't think the average person has the setups that we have or the same passion. For the casual person, mp3s or some streamed sources where they never own the music is fine. That's what makes me wonder about where physical media will be in the future. I'd guess if anything, vinyl pressings will increase over the next 10 years while CD sales would decline. The failure of the large music chain stores has kind of proven that and even places like Best Buy have greatly reduced floor space for CDs these days. However, the independent shops here in Chicago have flourished and the floor space to vinyl far outweighs the space dedicated to CDs.

Music will end up being in three main media:
1) MP3s for 90% of the music 2) Hi Res downloads 3) Vinyl Physical CDs, SACDs etc. will take less and less share; I consider streaming more like radio, especially as it becomes deliverable via more and more portable devices. Gents, we're not average when it comes to this stuff - it's a reason I consider myself lucky to be able to listen to tubes & vinyl in this day and age. Kids today don't think much in terms of physical media. It's the same for me as books - I love 'em and have held off buying a tablet, but expect to do so later this year, and book buying will become a rarity for me. I still buy CDs, but have no problem with hi res downloads, and of all my music have a tiny fraction as iTunes-purchased MP3s in my library, mostly of one-hit wonders from the 60s & 70s for which I'd never waste money on the entire CD.

I'm still a cd guy. Every time I think of moving to newer formats, I read some article on how unstable and in flux the technology still is
Furthmore, today's CDs are pretty good- sometimes even rivaling some of my sacd in sound quality. |
