Default pair of 15" or one fathom

Stick with the pair of 15" subs I have or jump on a too good to pass up deal on a new F113? I do not use subs for music. I used to until I purchased mains that can handle the bottom end. I loved my subs for music and they are excellent for HT also. I hear a pair of fathoms every time I go to the Krell dealer and every time I go to my brothers house and I just want them even know what I have is very good. I have an opportunity to pick one up and I will be in the market for a second as soon as I tie up some other financial obligations I have going. So my question is.... If I have a small room (13.5'X14.5') and the gain on the pair of 500 watt amps driving the 15"s are only at 50%, will one F113 be ample to fill the room to my satisfaction? I am used to the coverage a pair of subs provide and I run my subs about 6 db hotter than reference where the rest of the system is calibrated too.

Also keep in consideration it is a case of something I want more so than need and don't want to be unhappy with a single until I can get a second F113.

There is quite of bit of science that says two properly placed subs are almost always better at solving room related problems than one. Harman Kardon has done the most well known research, I think, and if I remember correctly, they have a "white paper" or two that you should be able to find online.

I was happy with my velodyne sub. until I added 2 JLF112 subs to my home theater with built in automatic room optimazation. All I can say is what a improvement .

I had two 15"subs(DD'sVelodyne) in my 11X15 room,I auditioned one f-113.
I have to say musically she fit superbly, you just hear it and say that's it.
So I picked up another as like you say two are difinately better than one.
With one I know if you move even a foot from your spot the lowend changes,
two just gives a nice layer of bottomend for the rest of the music to play on.
The trouble with one JL is you want more,so I picked up another for music.
Of course I wach movies also and had to have another set so I picked up two more.

Now we are moving into a bigger house and I'll have quite a bit bigger room,
maybe Gotham's,I'm sure the F-113's will be just fine,we'll seeeeeeeeee.
There's quality sound, whether for music or movies you hear instantly with the JL's,
IT's SOooooo ADDICTIVE.

What is odd to me is that I competed in car audio 20 years ago and JL subs came out and they caught on quick but I never liked the three 10" I had in my car. That was the preferred set up back then but it just did not have the "hit" I needed. The 10's were quick and great for the SQ part of the competition but did not produce enough DB's for me. So I went to a pair of 12" JL subs and they were boomy boomy boomy, I could not stand them for 1 day before I threw a pair of Kicker Solobaric 12's in there. Instant improvement, just about where I wanted to be. The Solobaric's could handle more power if placed in a smaller enclosure so I quickly went to 3x12's and to this day I have not heard better bass. There is something about car audio, if you go through all of the hassle to get it right, and believe me a car is a horrible place to try to get accuracy and sound staging because of windows everywhere, it is an amazing experience.

Anyway.... what I am trying to get at is that I never liked JL after that and I was shocked to hear the F113 because I was expecting this loose, slow one note bass and was I wrong.

Here is another issue I was pondering yesterday while enjoying some music late at night when it is finally quiet around my house. I have the subs in the front corners and the mains are not that far in front of them so, if I go to just one for a little while and even know the subs are not playing, will that make the 2ch unbalanced because the rear reflections will be uneven?

I could just try it now but it will be a small project for 2 people to move my subs around so I thought I would just ask.
