It does not exist in hockey during the playoffs, only in the regular season.

I found Penalty Shootouts were used in the sport of Soccer back as early as the 1970’s. In the Euro Championship, they appear to have started in 1976. The World Cup began using them in 1977.

There were a few ways used over the years to settle draws - even drawing straws.

The times we live in are going to be a lot more, how can I politely say this, hectic? Words cannot say it I'm afraid. It's the charge of the light brigade on eternal repeat, and I will probably take up un paid leave over the winter. I'm on night's in August but 7 day shifts lie in my way. Some of my colleagues still haven't a clue.
