Thanks. And, isn't that the truth. 10K+ miles since the last weekend in June. Ready for this 3-week break (if you don't count this morning's 'fun' match - but only a 35mi drive, so doesn't really count ).

Just gathered all the parts for my next rifle build. This one will be a .223R Rem M700 stainless single-shot action wearing a 28" long Bartlein stainless barrel with 7.7" twist in a heavy varmint profile. Both will sit in a Stocky's LRC stock and will use a 6.5-20x40mm Leupold scope. This will be my F-Clsas F/TR rifle. If it shoots well will likely put a Nightforce scope on it. In pic #2 you can see the fluted firing pin. Makes it lighter, which improves the lock-time.

Hi Comp shooters. I'm Gary Ocock. I build and shoot short range benchrest rifles. Been doing that 40+ years. Started out in Penna. shooting the IBS and NBRSA organization matches. I moved to Arizona 25+ years ago and continued my shooting. I shoot usually 10 matches a year. Started with the audio stuff about 5 years ago first headphones and then the big stuff. I listen to music nearly every day. Like most on this site I continue to try to improve my stuff; both the shooting and the audio stuff.
Talk at you later.
Gary

BR - a most exacting game. What distances do you shoot? Are you competing at the Ben Avery range?

Am hoping to get up to Ridgway, PA to shoot one of their long-range BR varmint silhouette matches this season. 800-1000yd from the bench. Should be fun and 1st-timers, like I'll be, are considered to have done well if they break into double-digits out of 40 animals.

Yes to Ben Avery. We have 7 registered (NBRSA) matches a year at BA. All 100-200 yards. 98% of the group shooting matches are 100-200 yards shot in the US. Most short range BR shooters don't care to shoot 300 yards as the farther out you shoot, the larger the groups get and most want to see little groups on the target. I also shoot in CA (Visalia), Tacoma WA, Raton NM, and Albq. NM. I will also travel sometimes Nationally to shoot our National events. When I lived in PA for a few years I shot a match in Englishtown NJ. When in PA I shot several ranges in Pa., NY, OH, and VA. I've met some really interesting people shooting Group benchrest; formed good relationships that have lasted many years.

Shooting the Shippensburg BPCR silhouette match this Fri/Sat. It is a nice range.
May use the Ruger No.1 in their Light rifle category at the shorter distances one of these days just to see how it will do. I use it to shoot our all off-hand 100/150/200m still gong match, but do have a bipod I could use at Ship.

No question.......... BR shooting is very precise. Longer-range BR is drawing more competitors all the time. Many folks like to 'reach out'.

Tied for 3rd overall (31 competitors) with a 28/40 and lost on 'chicken count', so was 4th. Chickens are shot at 200m off-hand and are, by-far, the most difficult animal to score well on and are a game for the steady hold of "youngsters" (I'll be a 'super-senior' when I turn 70 later this year). I got 2 and the 40-something shooter that beat me got 6, which is a terrific score in a game where the average number of chickens is between 2 & 3, with the lower level shooters often hitting zero. The MW (match winner) was Brian Chilson (our 15-time national champion, who shot an outstanding 36) and 2nd overall (with a 29) are both 'master' level shooters, as is the shooter that I tied with. So I did pretty well, leading the pack of AAA shooters. Would be nice to make 'master' (takes three scores of 31, or higher, in 2 years in order to move up) this year, as will likely be my last opportunity. The ravages of time will tell.

The 'big' (regional) matches start next month. 2-day Ohio Valley regional in May, 1-day 'Supershoot' 60-shot match at Shippensburg in June, followed by the 2-day regional at the NMLRA range just west of Cincinnati the next weekend. I'll miss the 3-day MI regional and 4-day nationals in July, as we are spending the month in Europe. 2-day eastern regional in Sept at Ridgway, PA and 4-day SE regional in GA in Oct. Will shoot another 8 or 10 1-say matches at various venues over that period of time.

Well done Glenn! It's fun to follow your events and learn along the way.
