I paid SS $362 for his TOTL stylus/ruby cantilever, so $50 more for the boron.

Wow! I don't know how long ago that was but that's a good price. Just last month SS quoted me $425 and since they're backed-up, it will take them min. three month.

Mine broke as well. It was the stock cartridge from my Mt 10. I replaced it with a $75 Grado that sounds far better than the original McIntosh-ClearAudio. Do expensive phono cartridges really make such a difference?

Indeed. Better sounds better, within the 'law of diminishing returns'. You might find the Ortofon 2M Black MM meets your needs. Also, set up and alignment of the cartridge is critical for the best results.
