BMW's recommendations. For the first 1200 miles: - vary road speed and engine speed (don't use cruise control) - keep engine speed under 4500 RPMs - keep road speed under 100 mph - avoid full throttle and steptronic kick down Porsche Don't know about the 997.1, but on the 997.2 it is 2,000 miles. Manual states take longer trips, avoid frequent cold starts, keep it under 4200 rpm, etc, etc. Lots of luck keeping it under 4200 for 2k miles. MBZ i would think the AMG engineers would know more about this then us forum guys. so with that in mind i would follow the instructions that you will find on the upper left corner of the inside of your windshield. under 1k miles no kick down and no revs above 4500 rpm. only drive in comfort mode. do not down shift with paddles stay under 85 mph. Ferrari & Lamborghini have a 500 mile break in; revs no greater than 4K.

Well, for all intents and purposes, for the cars that 99% of the people drive, there are effectively no break in requirements, no break in oil, no warranty issues for not following a specified break in etc.
Break in has become a fallacy, just like the need for oil changes every 3000 miles, for the average everyday car under typical conditions. You can't abuse a car from the word go, but break in, as defined during our grandparents day, no longer exists. And for the cars mentioned, because of their high performance nature, good luck in adhering to the recommendations! From what I can remember having seen on TV, Ferrari and Lamborghini violate there own break in requirements for virtually every car that leaves the factory just in their shake down test drive after production!

I don't believe in break in for modern cars. Let the car warm up and come up to normal operating oil temp and heat cycle the engine bringing up the revs and letting it cool repeating the process first few hundred miles. After that drive it like you stole it. Have done this with all my cars and bikes for the past 25 years and they all ran nice and strong. Many articles on the Internet support similar process.

I don't necessarily disagree with your thoughts about break-in or lack thereof, but you've got to admit that citing "many articles on the Internet support similar process" could be said about almost anything, one way or the other.
