Rake is the last step of the process, though it is integrated with toe in/toe out and listening position. You are aligning the speakers vertically to each other and the room to avoid both floor bounce (often the worst first reflection in a room) as well as ceiling reflection. The key is to get the speakers to sound the same as one another both side to side and floor to ceiling.

If you use a live recording with consistent hall/harmonic information and force yourself to listen to one half of the image you can hear the differences very easily. Easiest way is to get the speakers to the same height first, and then gradually bring them to the correct rake (up or down depending on the speaker design). When rake is correct not only do you get realistic sense of hall/height but more importantly the tonal balance is correct. You may have to revisit toe in/toe out based on the surrounding boundaries and how much rake you have applied.

One caveat is this only works if the speakers are already properly positioned when you start to rake. If the speakers have not been properly coupled to the room and each other in the bass/ mid bass then it will be more difficult to get rake correct.
