This is the family pet. She is a tiny ferret. I did not want this fuzzy thing. As it turns out, she likes me the best. Go figure.

I am very pleased to say that we retrieved our kittens from the shelter! They initially got adopted right away, but the family had a 5 year old, and they worried that he would be too rough with them. When we saw a post from the local shelter on Facebook about how sweet these two were, my wife and I decided it was a a sign and we had to get them back; our adult cat could just suck it up! We'll squirt her with water if she acts aggressively toward them.

It's so nice having them back.

That's great news Eventually your adult cat will adapt to the kittens. I would advise that you show more affection and attention to the big kittie and let the little ones make friends(they will eventually).

Thanks. She still gets very stressed. This morning she seemed to have "trapped" one of them in a corner under a chair, so I was trying to get her to move. She growled loudly and tried to bite me. I had a squirt bottle in my hand and blasted her in the face! I then read online that that was about the worst thing I could have done, because as the article stated, it would make her fearful of me, and sure enough she growled at hissed at me every time I came near her. All was forgiven about an hour later when it was time for her lunch. She was purring and rubbing up against me. I just don't want her to try to hurt the kittens, and I hate how much it stresses her, both reasons why I returned the kittens to the shelter, so I hope she adapts sooner than later! (They were together six weeks before, with only occasional signs of improvement, such as lining up to watch birds through the bedroom sliding glass door!)

Not always true, but hopefully in this case.
I have a cat that lives in a bedroom with the doors always closed. She never comes out. She has a litter box and we feed her in that room. It's pretty good size room with windows. She has been a freak for years and is afraid of our other cat, our two Golden Retrievers, and all people except my daughter who is off at college.
She has ruined our carpets from peeing. She would crap anywhere she felt like it. We had the carpets replaced twice and finally had to put down hardwood floors. We think she has probably cost us $50-$75,000 in repairs/replacement and that is no exaggeration.
This all happened when we started adding pets. So.....pets do not always adapt.
Our Vet recommended it euthinization but the cat is my daughters and I just could not do that.
Ok, let me get up and go feed that pain in the a$$ cat & empty her litter box.

Watch Jackson Galaxy. He has great tips and ways to introduce cats to each other. In many cases, you need to put them in separate rooms and gradually introduce them, like putting their food on either side of a closed door and letting them smell each other. Then need to gradually go from there. Maybe with a gate, etc but use food as an incentive. It'll take time. Also make sure they have plenty of cat highways; another is to make sure there's vertical space/cat tree/wall shelves, etc. for your older to,escape to yet feel like he has his territory.

Also I don't think, the water bottle is necessarily the best means of directing their behavior. Also, make sure you have a couple of litter boxed around.
