Default Test for Imaging/Soundstage with MATT Test

Here's a fun one to try. But beware, your brain can only track articulation or imaging, but not both at the same time.

Play the MATT Test on your system. Its a mono signal, so you should hear a single image between the speakers.

Now listen to how the signal bounces around. It might get big and fuzzy, then narrow down to a sharp point. It might even wander between the speakers.

What you want is a consistent sharply focused spot between the speakers. Any wandering, size changing, etc is an indication that your speakers/room are giving you a variable image. Maybe men's voices are stable, but by the time you get to the female range things are moving around.

It may take a few runs through this to get your mind to relax and follow the image. We seem to pick up on the articulation aspect of the signal easily, the da-da-da-da-da-da of pulses. As you're working on hearing the image, you also notice the clicking. But that is for another day.

Let me know how your images did!
