That's why antibiotherapy at the same time is mandatory or the infection will explode.
It also serves as a pain killer here.

Antibiotics help a bit but not much.
Since you cannot see any dentist for the next two weeks, I recommed that you
continue with Augmentin at 2 gms per day and add cortisone at 60 mgs a day : you take 3 pills of 20mg at breakfast during about 4 days. But take care, cortisone must be taken WITH antibiotics. If you stop AUGMENTIN and take cortisone, it will be worse.
Avoid salt during the Cortisone days.
Good Luck !
Jerome,

Thanks so much for the advice. I'll see if I can't get Ivan to reward you with some cool gear.

There is no way to open the tooth at sea, so I will have to wait. I have a wierd job, and most of what I do is classified, so I cannot divulge where we are going and when we will arrive. I can say that it is a major city in modern country in the Middle East, so I should be able to find someone qualified. I will do as you say to the letter. Regarding the pain (it hurts!), I ran out of Lortabs yesterday and getting anything controlled on the ship is impossible. What do you suggest? Also, the Augmentin seems to eat my stomach alive (down south if you get my drift). Is there anything to mitigate the pain and the stomach crud?

I really can't thank you enough!

Bob

Bob
Bob, for the stomach crud, do you have Imodium on the boat ? Avoid alcohol, coffee and tea.
Eat yogurts and cheese to try to regain necessary germs. You may also be intolerant or allergic to Augmentin.
Do you have access to an other antibiotic on the boat ?
Do you have or are you suspected to have a stomach ulcer ? In this case, cortisone is contraindicated.
If you don't have access to pain killers or cortisone on the boat, that will be difficult to help.
You can drink iced drinks or put ice on your jaw but don't let it more than 1 minute and rest 1 minute. Put the ice cubes in a light clothe to avoid getting burned by the ice.

As long as you consider the antibiotics overseas "safe", I would stay on them until you can been seen by the endodontist. My preference would be Pen VK over the Augmentin. The Augmentin is very hard on your GI system and Pen VK is the drug of choice for dental infections. You can take 600 mg of ibuprofen and 500mg of acetaminophen every six hours for pain if you are unable to get prescription medication. Unfortunately, the only "cure" is receiving treatment for the tooth (root canal therapy, closure with a filling and a good crown). Be aware that 13% of all root canal therapy fails regardless of treatment. If the case is complicated that percentage goes up. I wish you well!
Thanks for the advice!
