Being a Krell dealer myself, and been factory trained; I can agree with your comments Mike.

I chose a pair of JL Gothams in both my Theaters over the Krell MRS. Best Sub in the World, is purely subjective.

For what it is worth, The Absolute Sound did some extensive testing using 1 and 2 subs and found that to realize stereo affect @ 20Hz 2 subs would have to be located 56 feet from the listener.

I can hear localization of my Stereo Gothams at a distance of 15' in two different venues.

In my room...I daisy chain 2 JL F212s to make up the .1 channel. Have not tried to integrate into the 2 channel setup. Putting the 2nd sub in smoothed the room response a lot...as was mentioned above...highly recommended.

Ivan, if the sub is way off to one side I would agree with you. I might even agree that two subs in some rooms are better than one, but not always. A properly placed sub situated between the two speakers can produce a very smooth room response and this location virtually eliminates the problem of low frequency localization, at least it does in my room. I also agree that my opinion of the Krell MRS is purely subjective to a point. I say this humbly knowing of your great knowledge. But I would point out that DA built the best subwoofer he knew how to build in 2001 regardless of price and Krell has improved upon it since then. I do not believe that the JLG in objective comparision of build quality, from cabinet materials, drivers, amplification, or quality of low level signal electronics remotely matches the Krell MRS. Yet none of what I have said means that the Krell MRS sounds better that a JLG, only that it will be much more expensive to manufacture and its price 3.5 times higher.

Charles... The only thing you forgot was weight, the Gotham weighs more.

Ivan, I thought that the weight of the JLG was 360 lbs but I could be incorrect. The Krell MRS comes in at 400, of this I am certain. I will tell you an interesting story. When the sub arrived I wondered how they would get it up the stairs into my rec room. I had never seen a full body dolly before. It's like a heavy corset with large suspenders with a heavy duty mat situated in between the two men wearing the apparatus. The sub has broken once. Krells are hot running things. Krell flew out an expert to repair it at no charge and made an upgrade also at no charge. I have good feelings towards Krell because of the topnotch way I was treated.

The Gotham is a bit over 400, they are both beasts!

I run 2 subs, more control, bass is tighter and deeper at lower volumes . And most notable the direction is lost with more than one.

All though, my main 18" deep sub is cut off at 40 hz -12 db per octave. So it is real hard to locate her except that it weighs 350 lbs and that is with no on board amp.

I added a special built JL as a 2nd sub and it is a monster like the Gothams, only it was custom built and uses the MX 150 to send the signal from a 1000 watt dedicated amp.

2 is better 1 is a must

None of you mention how you are actually running your subs as far as signal passage is concerned. I run my Krell MRS essentially biamped, meaning that the small signal going to my midrange/treble remains totally undisturbed by subwoofer electronics because the sub is independent and runs off Speaker 1 main outs from the preamp. The MC XRT 29 is an ideal speaker for a subwoofer. The MRS also has a very useful bypass mode so that if you must run the signal through the subwoofer electronics, it remains very (but not completely) pure. I am a bass aficionado, having owned Genesis II's for ten years and heard their mighty subwoofers. Their midrange panels were designed specifically for the subs and even then integration was a problem with too much low bass and not enough upper bass. You all seem to think that two subs are better than one. Yet a well placed single sub like a Krell MRS situated between the speakers gives superb smooth bass. Also, your small signal coming from your preamp is significantly degraded if you are first passing it through your subwoofer electronics which are relatively cheap compared to the rest of your highend 2 channel system. Now everything is relative and also a trade off, but this is the reason folks pay the really big bucks for speakers like the XRT2K.
