I am trying to educate myself. I'm wondering what this means in the real world -- in terms of sound quality.

Comparisons of gain at 1 kHz:

PH9

55 dB at 1 kHz (SE only, no balanced)

Reference Phono 2

Selectiable Low (51 dB BAL / 45 dB SE) and High (74 dB BAL / 68 dB SE)

Reference Phono 3

Selectable Low (51 dB BAL / 45 db SE) and High 73 dB BAL / 67 db SE)

If you need the added gain for a low output MC, it obviously makes all the difference in the world.

And now that I have a fully balanced/differential phono preamp, I never want to go back to single ended. IMO, the best place in a system to use a balanced/differential connection is in the phono stage. After all, a phono cartridge is inherently balanced.

Why McIntosh doesn't offer a tube integrated is beyond me. They never replaced the MA2275. Probably not a huge seller, but it seems AR moves a bunch.
This amp looks beautiful and I like the new features!

I beleave that is a stereo amp and not an integrated amp. That is to complete the foundation series LS28 preamplifier.
