Dan, read my comments in the Momentum audition I recently performed. The Ref 5 / DAC 8 combo was unable to define the high end content on several songs that my C-1000/MCD-1100 combo handled without issue.

After I get back from NY I the dealer and I are going to give the same tracks with another amp to see how it sounds.

Jim.......Very interesting. I will be curious to hear how this shakes out with different gear.

I didn't mean to create the impression that ARC was being considered for my systems. I am completely satisfied with the performance that McIntosh delivers, but I have admired ARC gear and always enjoy hearing about ARC owner's experiences.

Jim...that sounds very peculiar. The DAC 8 and the Ref 5 (from everything I have read and from user comments on AA and other forums) are both highly resolved and supposed to be very extended on the frequency extremes. Do you know what input/settings were being used on the DAC 8? Sounds like the DAC 8 may not have been properly set-up if I had to guess. It's one thing if the combo had a different presentation or character than your C-1000/MCD-1100 but it's another altogether for the ARC combo to miss out or congeal that content completely. At that level I can wholeheartedly accept differences in taste but for the ARC combo to miss it completely sounds like something was wrong there.

So Serge, how is it going for you ?
Did your listening sessions shifted to one of the two systems in the 2 channel room ?

Jerome, so far I've been really enjoying my time with the new REF system while it is still breaking in. I am very impressed with what I am hearing. The Shindo stack will once again get some play time as soon as the break in on ARC is complete.

Serge... I'm very glad to hear your new REF system is exceeding your expectations. In today's world, that is fast becoming a Rare occurrence.

That's great Serge !
Did you notice a hum in your speakers from the REF 2 with no signal when you turn on the volume very high on the REF 5 ?

Jerome, I got your PM but didn't get a chance to answer since I was away from my system for some time. I checked it out last evening, it is quiet but as you know, I have REF40 preamp. Not that it should make a difference.
