I really was not sure which way to go between gimbaled and uni pivot so I just went towards the majority of positive feedback from owners.I'm not smart enough to be nervous..LOL I hope I made the right decision.

You made the correct decision. The VPI Gimbaled Fatboy is an excellent arm. An extra bonus, it will be easier to set up than a uni-pivot.

With the Fatboy there are no bad decisions. Either the gimbaled or uni-pivot are truly phenom arms. Enjoy what you have, no second-guess with these arms.

VPI has setup videos on YouTube (search for “VPI prime setup”). Also on YouTube search for Michael Fremer, you’ll find several videos on TT setup.

One of the keys to proper set-up is having the right tools and the knowledge to use those tools. A good cartridge alignment tool would be a great place to start. There are many out there. IMO, I think the VPI alignment gauge is okay but a better one would be the Dr. Feickert Next Generation Alignment Protractor. Other necessary tools include a digital stylus gauge, a test record such as one made by Analog Productions and some method (e.g. listening) or tool to dial in azimuth (Fozgometer). If your Fatboy didn't come with the Soundsmith Counter Intuitive, it's a worthwhile investment for easier set-up. Also getting a smartphone app such as the "Magnifying Glass HD" really helps seeing the stylus using whatever alignment tool you use. Best of luck!

I use a 20x2 HO so I don't have to deal with the extra stage of amplification. Though I do have a MP 100 for the other table if I should decide to replace the 20 x with a XX2. Maybe for Christmas. My youngest piece of Mcintosh is is about two years old. The oldest two pieces approaching 50 years old. With other pieces ranging from 40 years old to 4 years old. I choose to stay away from their tube stuff but that doesn't mean you should.

I also used zero anti-skating as that appears to be the VPI way. When in Rome do as the Romans I thought. The results were as close to perfection as I've ever achieved and in a fraction of the time it normally takes me with a good protractor. Last edited by damacman; 07-10-2020 at 10:55 PM. |

Congratulations on your new Avenger. It looks great! Glad your alignment went without a hitch. Young eyes are a valuable "tool" to have around! We oldies have to rely on other means to get the setup spot-on. |

Best thing about that was she had equity in the setup so she was anxious to hear the results. What a great day.
