I have to agree with this.....it's amaing to see how the marketing of Bose has gotten itself ingrained with the "culture" if you will of consumer electronics. Back before my medical career, I was one of the blazer-wearing Circuit City sales people back in the good days when they worked on commission and sold some pretty decent audio video products. What was amazing is how the name Bose stoked a fire under some people and 99.9% of the time it was positive! I can't remember how many times we would see sales of audio systems and home theater systems returned for various reasons, but if it included Bose speakers, the speaker system was not returned! One of the cardinal sins was trying to talk people into buying a different brand....if you did that you were asking for trouble. Anyway, love Bose or not, they have made a lot of contributions to audio and acoustics and bringing awareness to the masses.

After only 18 months, my B&W Zeppelin definitely gave up. It simply died on me.
A known problem of the first generation it seems.
So my old 2.1 Bose system came back on duty in my practice. And while not the equal of the Zeppelin in sound quality, it defends itself well, and I feel it will last a long time there!

The man deserve all our respect, at least mine.

I started out auditioning the Bose 901 II with the then Bose Pre/Power amplifier. What a soundstage it projected. Of course, they were then priced out of my league but I had a dream. I made a promise that I will own them some day and I did own 2 pairs of them, one the 901 S3 (with the matching Spatial Control Receiver - so cool, touch the BOSE logo to on/off) and later to a pair of limited editions Bose 901 Concerto's with built in power amp at the pedestal.

For all the bashings about his product, the way he made his money, no doubt he remained a gentleman, more so from what I know, he supported the local dealer here even when they were on bankruptcy. Today, they rebuilt their business and thanks to him. I knew cause I was very close with the son who is running the business today. I dont think there are many who will do that for an overseas dealer/distributor. He is a good man!

While I had moved on to other marques, I still own a pair of nose-cancelling headphones as well as the Bose Wave system for my wife, now passed to my daughter listening pleasure.

RIP Dr Bose.

Back in the day I purchased a pair of Bose 901 series II because I just could not reach the funds needed for Dahlquist DQ10's. The Dahlquists sounded so much better, but the cheap pizo tweeter turned me off, and the 901's served me well for several years, replaced by Janszen Z824 hybrid electrostatics. They did with the right power present a reflective sound stage that brought me to Magnapan's eventually.
RIP Dr. Bose!
Regards,
Jim

I think recognizing the marketing savy of Bose is a compliment and a credit to all that the man achieved. I look back on the deal Bose did with a major Automotive manufacturer - this was brilliant marketing and unheard of at the time. It was very lucrative for Bose, ended up helping other manufacturers who followed the lead and most importantly OEM automotive audio is massively better then the joke it used to be.

The achievements in audio and consumer electronics by Bose are many and indeed the man will be missed. RIP Amar Bose

Great posts all, I especially enjoyed those from Jerome and Juilan! I think many of us had some Bose in our lives at some point - I still have a Wave Radio that was part of a company spiff (it outlived the Proton), and one set of the noise canceling cans we have are Bose.

Here is a link to another article. Amar was born in Philadelphia, so this has
a bit more of a local twist to it.

Bose founder, Philly rooted, dies at 83

Now if you will permit me a moment of well intentioned humor, not meaning any disrespect for the man or his family, I wonder if he was surrounded by family, reflecting on his life's work, when he passed?

One of the companies I worked for back in the day did much of the market research for Bose. All I can say was he was very keen on brand value per individual consumer unit, whether that consumer owned Bose equipment or not. In many ways he was ahead of his time and pushed us to think outside the normal models in use.

RIP doc

For ages I was a member of the anti-Bose league without ever hearing any of their gear! Then, a few years ago, I happened into a Bose store in a mall and "for laughs" tried their AE-1 headphones...much to my surprise they sounded great and offered excellent isolation, and I bought them for my iPod. Later that year, my wife bought me a Bose Wave radio/CD player, which offers quite decent sound--perfect for the office or bedroom. Just this year she got me some Bose Companion 20 computer speakers, which also sound quite good. Is Bose gear truly hi-end? Of course not, but it does offer inherently "musical" sound for a decent price. RIP, Mr. Bose.
