That could be an option. I'll have to see if there is a dealer around that could audition one. That's a little ways off though. First I need to decide on speakers. I have no local Magico dealer, but I have an audition scheduled in Massachusetts in two weeks. Their I'll be focusing on the S5 and Q3 with Boulder and Hegel amplification. In all likelihood, I would break the new speakers in on my McIntosh stack while taking the time to audition amps.

Hey ...

Your recent run in was nothing , you should see the demands and emails sent my way before stepping off...

More magico vs Wilson for them ...

Hi Matt, if you can afford Q3's (which are $10k more than the S5's), i'd (personally) rather buy the S5's and spend the extra $10k on my amp. Although I like both the Boulder 865 & Vitus RI-100, imho the S5's deserve a better amp, and the Q3's certainly deserve better amplification...something to think about.

That's a good point, David, and I do appreciate the feedback. Realistically, the Q3's are probably pushing what I'm willing to spend, so my eye is really on the S5.

I would certainly want to do right by them amplification-wise. As I mentioned, I'm hoping to break them in with my current gear and have a chance to audition a few options.

Unfortunately, I did find out that there is no Vitus dealer anywhere close. They did say that there is an RD-100 and RS-100 in Denver left over from RMAF that I could audition, so that could at least give me some idea.

Boulder, Ayre, and Hegel are much more accessible.

I had the same dilemma when I was looking for my current speakers. I could have stretched to buy the Q3's, but I was clutching at straws really trying to decide which speaker I preferred. There are some things the Q3's do better, and some things the S5's do better I thought. What was clear to me is I didn't need better speakers than the S5's & saw more value in saving toward a better front end (as i'd already committed to buy the Vitus).

I understand your limitations accessing some gear for audition, and at this level i'd consider it mandatory to audition any suiters with atleast some Magico speakers (even if they're not S5's) to decide if you like the sound

If you're considering Boulder, i'd try to get an audition of a Boulder 1060 with a tube preamp. The 1060 sounds great with tubes upstream. Amazing bass & resolution with some tube virtues of warmth, sweetness & holography to balance out the sound. Mint condition 1060's regularly come up for sale at accessible prices. I used to own a 1060 & ran a modded Ayon CD-5s with upgraded tubes as my linestage. My main reason for moving on the Boulder was that I wanted to reduce my box count & focus on a better front end.

Just curious,
how many have tried Stillpoints under their Magico speaker and what was their experience.
Thanks
