Cheers,
Thanks for all the replies guys. I guess it has a lot to do with the country and/or state you live in.

Serge bought 2 cars without even being asked, Ivan said that you can't get around it.

I can see the dealership's point of view - I give them a small piece of paper (a check) and they let me drive away a new car. I am sure I could have gotten around it if I had time and my son was not there with me - I'll know better next time.

So, for the follow-up question ... are any of you doing anything to protect from identity theft? Most of the reviews I've read about the companies that charge you for it are not very positive. Remembering to check your credit reports regularly is a hassle and easy to forget.

I can tell you from working for a national third party collection agency years ago, for a few years anyway, that NOBODY checks there own credit bureaus enough.

Alberto, are you talking about companies offering identity protection for a fee?

Alberto,
We have a Red Flags process in place and have had for over 2 years with bi-monthly meetings and constant oversight in place to insure that information remains private, It is a huge exposure issue that we take very seriously. What companies are charging for it? We certainly are not, and consider it our responsibility.
Regards,
Jim

Alberto, I use Equifax and am very happy with it so far. I said I "bought" two cars... The third one was a lease and it took almost 3 hours to get the deal done... Why? I forgot to "unlock" my credit with Equifax... Yes, you can "lock" your credit with them so it makes it much tougher for someone including yourself to get anything... After being drilled and grilled on the phone answering questions that would be extremely tough for any identity thief to know, I was finally on my way with the new car.

Alberto - if you were paying with a check I would demand your first-born as collateral. Just to make sure it was you.

Next time pay with a credit card - they only care about your state ID then since the liability is on the credit issuer - and it isn't considered a "cash" transaction thus triggering (not homeland security, but) the Treasury.

Car dealers here have stopped taking Credit Cards for purchasing a car. They will take a deposit, maybe $1k but not for a new car. They aren't willing to take the ~3% to 4% hit.

Thant is true at the majority of dealerships in the US, Profit margins generally won't allow it anymore.

It's amazing how much the gov't gets into your shorts with this stuff. I understand - up to a point - about security. It's only going to get worse - just found out we'll be required by the IRS with our rental property to issue w-9s & 1099s next year for anyone we deal with (>$500 or $600) regarding the condo. This certainly won't contribute to a real estate recovery.
