The Slippery Slope

On another forum ... this might be sent to thinking out loud. I have to say it has been fun the last year building my 2 channel room and system. My 2 channel system is finally where I want it for now ( ) . I know that when I decide to upgrade my audio in the home theater it will surely be another slippery slope ie starting with a new processor and new amps. which will lead to a new source , new sub, new speakers, wires....etc. .

David.......I guess I don't understand the "Slippery Slope" aspect of your comment. It seems to imply you aren't exactly sure where you are headed, or what the end results might be. I'll grant you, it has taken more than a little persuation to turn the lights on for you, but essentially you always had a clear direction. You wanted higher performace from your two channel system, and ultimately achieved it with guidance and encouragement from your audio friends.

I agree, one thing leads to another, and it has always been known that any system is no finer than its weakest link. You must keep adding building blocks until the desired end result is reached. The same can be said about any number of other things, as well. If you are not prepared to go the distance to reach a goal, then there is really no point in beginning. There are really no surprises, only greater challenges. You either rise to the occasion and control the outcome, or stay under the porch with the other puppies. With high-end audio, there's no slippery slope, although poorly conceived and executed plans can sometimes make it seem that way.

It does not have to be a slippery slope unless you decide to make it.

I put tremendous care and thought in my 2-ch audio system, but I am totally uninterested in investing time or money in home theater.

Believe it or not, all I have is a 46" Sony Bravia (I think that's what it is anyway) and I listen to it via the built-in speakers.

Call me crazy, but I want to keep my ears fresh for music and I look at TV/movies more as a distraction than a hobby or passion.

My point is that I initially started out with a need to replace a blown out pre amp. that was over 20 years old and only one channel worked. The new C220 allowed me to listen to music again and this revealed that I did not have just one weakest link but rather everything (speakers, cdp, amps.) including the room it was in needed a upgrade (so I could turn it up without disturbing everyone in the house). When I look at what I spent building a whole new room with custom built ins, stone fireplaces etc. and equipment compared to where I started looking back to my initial purchase of a C220, then you can see I did not stay under the porch but have slid down a slippery but fun slope. I have started to think about my home theater audio because it is not at the same level. Doing the planning in my head of what I would change will probably be a multi year fun project. I may go Meridian in this room but not sure yet.

David......The crystal ball I use for your readings shifts from clear to cloudy in the blink of an eye, and often makes it difficult to get a vision.

Seriously, I believe any two channel system can benefit from a quality subwoofer, particularly the Fathom f113. It will put the bottom into your audio performance that you don't even know is missing until it is there. The JL Fathom f113 is not a thumper, it is musical, and will greatly enhance your listening experience. Yes, I do see a Fathom f113 in your system, and you will thank me for this advice, once you make the purchase decision, have it in place and dialed in.
