That would be wild, but no. I bought them new from Stereo Exchange here in NY. February 1993, delivered on a Saturday that month (the 13th, I believe). I did buy some Kimber 8TC speaker cable and a Marantz DV8400 from Nicholson's, though.

Just got back from doing laundry, and took the latest TAS with me. Now, I'm excited about the Parasound JC 3+ again, and not just curious. I was all but ready to buy the original JC 3 at one point. Obviously, what I read is part of the problem.

Curiosity is human nature. Perhaps when the itch strikes, it would be good to remind oneself it's about the music rather then the equipment.

One of my usual tactics in these situations is to play something. Last night it was a new blu-ray, Batman: Assault on Arkham, based on the Batman: Arkham video game. It is one of the DC animated movie series (rated PG-13 by the way).

It has a very impressive soundtrack, and the powerful low frequencies over the BD menu shook the room a bit. Not things-falling-off-the-walls shaking, but subtle vibrations-you-can-feel shaking. I thought, "wow, why do I need to change this?" as I watched and listened. No, it didn't clear me of all curiosity about the pieces mentioned before, but it provides much-needed perspective and blunts, if only temporarily, the curiosity I have. Of course, playing a blu-ray doesn't involve a tuner or turntable, but the effect of a good demo can spread even to those somewhat since they are part of the system; "guilt" by association, in a way.

And if we're not careful it can become about the equipment. But last night, while the BD played, it was about the movie. A good sign.

For entertainment purposes only:

One result of all the curiosity and resultant exploring is that I have an idea of what my ideal system(s) might be. For the heck of it, there are a real-world fantasy system and an ultimate fantasy system. The "real-world" system is based on the current setup, the individual pieces are within reach or just outside it financially, and it applies to my current living circumstances; the "ultimate" system assumes sufficient finances and space.

Real-world

Kimber 12TC or Transparent MusicWave Plus

The Ultimate system will never happen. Some of the Real-world system has a chance, at least for the next few years. It will depend upon how strong my curiosity and resultant drives are, as well as what I think my wallet can stand.

The October TAS arrived yesterday and it has a review of the Golden Ear Triton One speakers. The review is by Anthony Cordesman.

It's a killer review, extremely positive and AC recommends the Triton Ones enthusiastically. The price is not bad either, at $2500 less than the Bryston Model Ts I'd rediscovered recently. If the Mirages went down today, I'm not sure what I'd get to replace them. I already decided I wouldn't attempt to fix them, but their replacement is still uncertain.

Two things about the Tritons give me pause. With powered speakers ground loops can be a problem; I'd wrestled with that for some time here. I have it under control through lifting the ground on several pieces of gear. And I don't like having to plug in my speakers, especially since outlets are at a premium here, and I'd rather my Macs drive any speaker anyway. I would be similarly wary of the Mythos ST-L for that reason.

Still, the Triton One review is compelling, and cannot be ignored. Since I'm not actively committed to a preemptive replacement of my M-3sis (yet), I have some safe ground to stand on. I have also just spent a bit over 2K on a new computer setup, so that mitigates the curiosity; for sure it dampens doing anything too extravagant for the immediate future. Of course, "dampens" isn't "destroys."

Charles.......There are new speakers on your horizon. Embrace it.

If it takes you as long to decide as it did the preamp, you have at least another 10 months of mental ping pong to share with us before new speakers actually arrive.

And this is why the last line, "dampens isn't destroys"; I know better than to be definitive either way right now.

Still, it's true that the incoming computer setup and software, plus the oncoming holidays, pretty much kill any major unnecessary move. If I give in to the curiosity as far as speakers go, it'll be next year at the earliest. And unlike the Def Techs or Golden Ears, the Brystons would represent taking on debt, as opposed to merely putting a hole in the checking account. Plenty of time to argue with myself the logic and philosophy of fixing what isn't broken before it breaks.

Maybe I should stop looking at the brochure.

Charles.......Yep, those damn brochures will get you in trouble. Brochures are prerequisites to purchases.
