Congrats on your new D1100 purchase. I would love to hear your impressions of it after it is broken in. I have been interested in purchasing one myself but still haven't heard any reviews of it yet.

We are all dying to know what DAC it uses.

It's the same DAC as the C47, C52 & C2600 isn't it? It would be the Sabre ESS9018 chip.

Lets hope not. The ESS 9018 has been out for quite some time.
McIntosh makes it sound likes this new DAC is much better than the ones used in the past

Not that it says something about the DAC chip inside but the drivers are the same mid 2015 drivers for all of McIntosh's current preamps. |

Drivers aren't related to the dac chip. If d1100 uses the same drivers, it means it uses the same usb to spdif converter. Es9018 and 9028 seems very similar. 9028 probably has more gates as it has improved oversampling and more filters. Added hw seems just a better power distribution which would potentially lower the noise floor but this is more for cheaper implementations I think. Mcintosh gear has good power components to feed the ess chip anyway.
I would take es9018 done right over es9028 that is a rock solid power section with all discrete components, custom i/v converters after the es chip rather than the built in one. |

The new ESS Pro 9028 DAC is a very significant upgrade over the 9018 chip. The current Pro series consists of 9026,9028 and 9038 DACs. I'd suggest you explore in more detail what you're trying to improve as no 9018 chip will outperform the newer chips. I have a 9026 in a W4S and it's the best DAC I've ever encountered. All manufacturers utilize chips in different configurations and it's not just about the DACs. Power supplies, analog implementation, parts quality all go far in determining a DACs capability. Good luck with your decision.
